Is it realistic to want this?
More and more people are looking for a realistic way to start growing a business while still working a day job. The main question that’s usually holding them back is: is it realistic to replace my income before leaving my job, to focus on my new business full time?
Believe me when I say IT IS realistic. And especially in today’s digital world. When I was starting out with my online venture, I was completely burned out. For over six months I was physically not able to work more than 5 to 6 hours a week on my business. But I still easily managed to set up my business, taking it step by step.
Gain confidence while growing your own business
What was really important to me was not just becoming independent. Firstly I wanted to find something I could do at my own pace. Pausing and accelerating when I felt like it. But I also wanted to find something that I could believe in. Earn an income with who I am and what I love.
I wanted to follow the advice of one of my favorite motivational authors Brene Brown and set myself up with a business that could not just bring success, but keep it very close to my heart and bring me fulfillment too.
Be vulnerable and invest in your personal development and awareness, not just professional development
What kind of business can you run part-time?
Like the famous author, Mark Manson states, you should build a business around what matters to you. He did, writing books. And he could have scaled up, but decided that it wasn’t for him. It would probably triple my workload and double my stress. I love to write and can make a living out of that, why change that? His perfect life? Working a 25-hour week, writing, relaxing with friends and family and traveling to cool places.
So start with something you believe in and feel confident selling. A product you can sell many times over without spending much personal time on customer service or transactions. After all, the last thing you want after realizing working on someone else’s dream isn’t serving you anymore is getting stressed out pursuing your own dream!
Get started with Affiliate Marketing
So what business models can work around your job? Affiliate marketing is a great one to start with. This is where you sell products other businesses produce and get a commission – without having to worry about fulfillment or delivery. If you’re an affiliate, the number of products you can sell is unlimited. And even greater, you can sell those products many times over, 24/7, 365 days a year. Even when you’re at work or sleeping, you are busy growing your income as you grow your sales.
Affiliate marketing is what I have been focussing on and I am still learning wonderful stuff!
Sell with E-commerce
Another option is to sell physical products with an E-commerce business. Here you don’t have to reinvent the wheel, ordering existing products in bulk at a fraction of the cost and then set up a sales system.
Opportunities like Amazon FBA will do the hard work for you. They will process the payments from customers and deal with the packaging, distributing, and customer service. In the meantime, you’ll get busy selling the products and setting up marketing and ad campaigns to make those sales happen – which you can do around your job in just one or two hours a day.
Something to consider as you go into this
Whatever you’re selling, the first 10 sales are going to be the hardest. But once you’ve made your first double figures in sales, you’ll gain confidence and learn to rinse and repeat – and grow. With time you’ll learn exactly how many sales you need to be making each week and each month to have a steady business that’s going to eventually replace your income.
People often want a decisive answer to the question “how long is it going to take?” But I’ve seen so many different success-stories – from 2 days to 12 months to make the first 10 sales. It all depends on if you picked the right product and offered it to the right audience – and of course the time and commitment you put into it to learn the digital skills you need to succeed.
